President John Mahama has announced that the National Signal Bureau (NSB) has been granted full authority to monitor and arrest individuals who use social media to spread hate speech or incite violence.
The President made this declaration during the Presidential Encounter with the media held on Wednesday September 10 at the Jubilee House.
According to him, the move forms part of government’s renewed efforts to safeguard national peace and security in the wake of increasing misuse of digital platforms.
He stressed that while freedom of expression remains a cornerstone of democracy, it must not be abused to promote division, hate, or instability.
“Social media is a powerful tool, but it should be used responsibly. Those who exploit it to incite violence or spread hate speech will face the full force of the law,” Mahama cautioned.
The announcement signals a stronger crackdown on online misconduct, with the NSB expected to step up surveillance, tracking, and enforcement actions against offenders. Security analysts say the decision underscores the government’s concern over the growing influence of harmful online content on national cohesion.
The President urged citizens, particularly the youth, to use social media positively to foster unity and development rather than discord.
