U.S. President Donald Trump has led tributes to conservative activist Charlie Kirk, who was shot and killed on Wednesday, September 10, 2025, during an event at Utah Valley University.
Kirk, 31, was the co-founder and CEO of Turning Point USA and one of Trump’s closest allies in the conservative movement. His sudden death has sent shockwaves through political circles, with Trump describing the young activist as “great, legendary, and irreplaceable.”
“The Great, and even Legendary, Charlie Kirk, is dead,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “No one understood or had the Heart of the Youth in the United States of America better than Charlie. He was loved and admired by ALL, especially me, and now, he is no longer with us. Melania and my Sympathies go out to his beautiful wife Erika, and family. Charlie, we love you!”
The White House quickly honoured Kirk by lowering flags to half-staff, following a proclamation by Trump directing all federal buildings, embassies, and U.S. facilities abroad to observe the tribute until September 14.
Kirk’s rise as a conservative firebrand had been closely intertwined with Trump’s political movement. Through Turning Point USA, he became a powerful voice on college campuses, rallying young Americans behind Trump’s policies and ideals.
Trump’s statement underscored not just personal grief but the depth of Kirk’s role in energizing a new generation of conservatives. “He had the Heart of the Youth,” Trump emphasized, a phrase that has since been echoed by many mourning his loss.
Authorities say the shooting, which unfolded moments after Kirk began addressing students under a campaign-style tent, remains under investigation. No arrests have been announced.
For Trump and his supporters, however, the focus remains on the void left by Kirk’s death. “Charlie was more than an ally,” Trump said. “He was family.”
