In a stinging reminder of the genre’s evolving global narrative, Spotify’s freshly unveiled 2025 Afrobeats rankings have delivered a clean sweep for Nigerian talent, leaving Ghana’s vibrant music scene conspicuously absent from the top echelons.

The streaming giant’s list, dropped on the eve of Nigeria’s Independence Day, crowns Burna Boy as the undisputed king of Afrobeats, with an all-Naija top five that underscores the genre’s commercial juggernaut status, and reignites fiery debates over its true roots in the sands of Ghana’s Highlife legacy.

At the helm, Burna Boy, the Grammy-winning Afro-fusion maestro whose anthems like “Last Last” and fresh 2025 drop “Sittin’ on Top of the World” have racked up billions of streams, claims the No. 1 spot, his eclectic blend of reggae, hip-hop, and log-drum pulses proving irresistible to listeners from Lagos to Los Angeles.

Trailing close behind is Rema at No. 2, the 25-year-old Benin City sensation whose viral “Calm Down” remix with Selena Gomez continues to echo in 2025 playlists, blending youthful bravado with electronic edges that have hooked Gen Z in Brazil and beyond.

Wizkid, the Starboy himself, locks in third place, his silky R&B-infused vibes from the “Morayo” era sustaining his evergreen appeal across the diaspora. The rankings don’t let up: Asake, the Yoruba street poet whose hypnotic Fuji-Afrobeats fusions like “Lungu Boy” have turned underground clubs into global fever dreams, snags fourth.

Rounding out the elite quintet is Ayra Starr, the 23-year-old Benin sensation and sole female powerhouse, whose breakout “Rush” follow-up “Hot Body” has shattered barriers, earning her a spot as Afrobeats’ rising queen with crossover charisma that rivals Beyoncé’s Lemonade era.
