Member of Parliament for Klottey Korle, Dr. Zanetor Agyeman-Rawlings, has defended her late father, former President Jerry John Rawlings, saying he was often accused of things he never did but chose to take responsibility as a leader.
Speaking on the “Talk No Dey Cook Rice” podcast on Tuesday September 30, Dr. Zanetor said criticisms of her father’s strict military rule have not always been based on truth.
“A lot of things that many people had accused him of actually had nothing to do with him. But he took ownership of everything because that’s what you do as a leader,” she explained.
She added that while some people who know the real truth behind those years are still alive, they have chosen to remain silent.
“There has been a lot of misinformation… There are people who know the actual truth, who are still alive today. But for reasons best known to them, they’ve kept quiet,” she said.
Dr. Zanetor further noted that her father was not loved by everyone, but he repeatedly acknowledged and apologised for excesses that happened during the revolutionary era — even for actions he was not directly responsible for.
Despite ongoing criticism of her father’s leadership style, she stressed her loyalty to her family.
“I will not publicly or privately turn my back on my parents because I know what they did, and I’m aware of the sacrifices they made,” she said.
Dr. Zanetor also criticised those who target her simply because of her father’s legacy, questioning whether such actions reflect maturity.
