Louis Vuitton’s ‘Ghana Must Go’ bag sparks debate across Africa

Luxury fashion house Louis Vuitton has stirred widespread debate across Africa following the release of its new bag, inspired by the iconic “Ghana Must Go” design.

Priced between $595 and $3,000, the piece has drawn criticism from many who argue that the brand failed to acknowledge the bag’s deep African roots.

The original “Ghana Must Go” bag has long been a household staple across the continent, symbolizing resilience, migration, and survival.

Its history traces back to 1983, during the mass expulsion of Ghanaians from Nigeria a period that gave rise to the now-famous name and cultural significance attached to the bag.

Louis Vuitton’s reinterpretation has reignited conversations about cultural appropriation, representation, and respect for African heritage within global fashion.
