Ghana’s iconic Kente cloth granted geographical indication status

Ghana’s world-renowned traditional fabric, Kente, has officially been granted Geographical Indication (GI) status  marking a historic milestone as the country’s first-ever GI-certified product.

The recognition affirms Kente’s authenticity, cultural heritage, and distinct origin, protecting it from imitation while promoting its value on the global market. The certification, endorsed under Ghana’s Geographical Indications Act, ensures that only fabric produced in designated Ghanaian communities, particularly Bonwire, Adanwomase, Agotime, and other traditional weaving centers, can be marketed internationally as genuine Ghana Kente.

The ceremony, organised by the Registrar General’s Department in collaboration with the World Intellectual Property Organisation (WIPO), drew key stakeholders from across the creative and cultural industries, celebrating this milestone achievement for Ghana’s heritage and craftsmanship.

With this recognition, Kente now stands shoulder to shoulder with global treasures like Champagne from France, Tequila from Mexico, and Darjeeling tea from India — products so deeply rooted in place and tradition that they are fiercely protected by international law.

Officials from the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA) and the Registrar General’s Department described the achievement as a breakthrough in preserving Ghana’s cultural identity while driving economic empowerment for local artisans and weavers.

Kente, long regarded as a symbol of royalty, pride, and African identity, is now set to benefit from enhanced market access, branding opportunities, and international recognition as a uniquely Ghanaian creation.

This landmark achievement positions Ghana as a leader in Africa’s cultural economy and underscores the importance of protecting indigenous products through intellectual property rights and geographical indication frameworks.
