GTA CEO pledges support to former staff member’s breast cancer campaign

The Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of the Ghana Tourism Authority (GTA), Mrs. Maame Efua Houadjeto, has pledged support to former GTA staff member, Aunty Comfort, who has dedicated her life to campaigning against breast cancer and assisting women battling the disease.

Speaking at a Breast Cancer and General Health Screening exercise held at the GTA Head Office in Accra on Tuesday, Mrs. Houadjeto announced that instead of making a donation to the Korle Bu Teaching Hospital as initially planned, the Authority will channel its support directly to Aunty Comfort’s advocacy efforts.

“Originally, we were going to go to Korle Bu to do a donation. But what is the point when Aunty Comfort has decided that she will sacrifice the rest of her life campaigning against cancer and taking care of other women who have the disease? Once you are a former staff member, we are going to support you in this way,” she said.

The GTA CEO urged women to prioritise regular breast checks for early detection, emphasising that timely diagnosis can save lives.

“Keep checking, because the earlier it’s noticed, the better it is for you. When it’s noticed early, it can be managed. But when it gets to stage 3 or 4, it becomes very dangerous,” she cautioned.

The screening exercise, which formed part of GTA’s corporate social responsibility activities, brought together staff and key stakeholders for free breast cancer and general health screenings, including eye and blood pressure checks.

Mrs. Houadjeto further highlighted the critical role of women in families and communities, noting that their health is vital to the nation’s well-being. “Women are the economic centre of our homes. We make it happen for everybody in the family. So we need you as mothers, big sisters, and daughters to stay healthy,” she added.

The initiative aligns with the Ghana Tourism Authority’s broader commitment to promoting public health advocacy within the tourism and creative arts community.
