‘Peace is more valuable than gold’ – Gucci Mane reflects on recovery

Rapper and trap pioneer Gucci Mane has opened up about his past struggles with mental health, revealing how trauma, fame, and street life once pushed him into emotional crisis.

Speaking on The Breakfast Club alongside his wife, Keyshia Ka’Oir Davis, Gucci discussed his new memoir The Diary of a Recovering Mad Man, which explores his personal journey of healing and transformation.

“I said some mean things back then,” he admitted, referring to online outbursts and periods of isolation. He described how unresolved trauma often led to emotional breakdowns, especially under pressure from Atlanta’s street culture.

Keyshia Ka’Oir shared emotional moments from that time, recalling how Gucci would sometimes stand silently outside their home for hours. “I had to kidnap him once and take him to the hospital,” she said, adding that early medical intervention helped stabilize him. He has reportedly been episode-free for nearly five years.

Gucci, now 45, also reflected on people he’s cut off since his recovery. “When I was going through those episodes, I would give away my jewelry — and they’d take it,” he said. “Now I know peace is more valuable than gold.”

He touched on his difficult relationship with his mother, his childhood in Atlanta, and how his older lyrics reflected pain he hadn’t processed.

Now more grounded, Gucci credits much of his growth to Keyshia’s support. Her presence, he says, was key to his transformation from the wild “Guwop” persona to the more centered man he is today.

The interview adds to growing conversations in hip-hop around mental health, vulnerability, and healing, challenging outdated ideas of masculinity in the process.
