Dallas Cowboys defensive lineman Marshawn Kneeland has died from an apparent suicide at the age of 24, authorities confirmed on Thursday November 6 morning.

According to the Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS), the incident began late Wednesday night, November 5, when troopers attempted to stop Kneeland’s vehicle for a traffic violation near Arlington at approximately 10:30 p.m. (CST). When the driver failed to pull over, a short pursuit ensued before his vehicle was later discovered crashed and abandoned along a rural road.

A search was launched after investigators learned that Kneeland had reportedly sent a goodbye message to family and teammates. Officers later found the player’s body around 6:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 6, from what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

The Dallas Cowboys issued a statement expressing shock and sorrow at the young athlete’s passing.

Kneeland, a second-round pick in the 2024 NFL Draft out of Western Michigan University, had quickly established himself as a promising defensive talent. Just days before his death, he had celebrated a career highlight—his first NFL touchdown on a blocked punt recovery during a Week 9 game.

Former teammates and fans across the league have taken to social media to share tributes, describing him as “humble,” “driven,” and “full of kindness.”

The Cowboys organisation is said to be providing mental health support for players and staff affected by the tragedy.

Kneeland’s family released a statement through their representative, thanking fans for their compassion and asking for privacy during this difficult time.

Authorities say the investigation remains open, but foul play is not suspected.
