Ghanaian playwright and entrepreneur Latif Abubakar has shed light on why he continues to cast actors like Ekow Smith Asante and Adjetey Anang, revealing that the two stars once acted in his productions without pay, purely out of passion and a shared mission to keep theatre alive.

In an interview with Merqury Quaye on Hitz FM on Thursday November 20, Latif recounted the difficult early days of his career, describing how these actors supported him even when there was no money to offer.

According to him, Ekow and Adjetey believed in his vision at a time when theatre was struggling, and their passion kept his productions alive.

“Once you make money, you need to pay debts. Look at people like Ekow Smith Asante and Adjetey Anang—they were just acting for free. I was not paying them,” he revealed.

“They believed in their dream. They believed theatre needed to resurrect… they believed someone had to ensure the industry doesn’t die.”

Latif expressed immense gratitude for their dedication, saying their loyalty is the reason he remains consistent in working with them today.

“We have the money to pay now. The money no be problem—we dey manage,” he joked. “But it’s time to show love to the people who were there for you in those times.”

He criticised the habit of some people who forget those who supported them during their lowest moments, stressing that real fulfilment comes from giving back.

“Some people tend to forget those who supported them in their dark moments,” he said. “For me, I feel extremely excited when I go back to those who helped me and support them, especially when they need it.”

Latif’s comments underscore the importance of loyalty and gratitude in the creative industry, highlighting how long-term relationships have shaped the revival and growth of Ghanaian theatre.
