Former Grammy genre manager Sean Thwaites in a viral video circulating online has claimed he was dismissed from the Recording Academy board after enforcing eligibility rules that in his assessment rendered Ghanaian-American artiste Moliy’s “Shake It to the Max (Fly)” remix ineligible for two Grammy categories.
According to Thwaites, the decision made during the 2025 Grammy consideration process affected the song’s submission for both the Best Global Music Performance and Best African Music Performance categories. He maintains that specific criteria required for the categories were not met prompting him to rule the remix out of contention.
Thwaites alleges that his enforcement of the rules caused significant internal friction within the Academy. He claims that this tension escalated and ultimately led to his removal from the Recording Academy board on 21 November 2025.
While the Recording Academy has not publicly commented on the circumstances surrounding his exit, Thwaites insists that his dismissal was directly linked to his insistence on upholding the eligibility standards.
The development adds a new layer to ongoing industry conversations about transparency, fairness, and internal decision-making within major music award institutions.
