From Detroit to Paris: King Promise shares story behind Davido collab

Ghanaian singer King Promise has finally revealed the full behind-the-scenes story of how his much-anticipated collaboration with Nigerian superstar Davido came to life, and it all started with birthday drinks in Detroit.

Speaking in an interview with Jay Foley on 3 Music on Wednesday December 3, King Promise explained that he was already working on a new album when he travelled to Detroit to perform at a festival where Davido was also billed to perform.

It happened to be his birthday, and that coincidence sparked what would become a major cross-border collaboration.

“It was my birthday, so I met him in the lobby… we had some drinks, celebrating my birthday,” he said.

After their performances, the two artistes linked up again, and the vibe was right. This time, King Promise was prepared.

“We always say we’ll make music, but it never really happens. This time I had my headphones, so I played him three options,” he shared.

Davido immediately picked the first one. “He was like, ‘Can we go back to that first one? I really like it.’”

From that moment, things moved fast. Davido returned to Atlanta, and King Promise went back to Washington DC but within two days, the Ghanaian star flew straight to Atlanta to catch him in the studio.

“We did it that same day,” he said. After recording, they stepped out to eat, and the next day, squeezed in a quick visualiser shoot due to their tight schedules.

But the real music video? That happened in Paris. Both artistes were headed there for Fashion Week, so they decided it was the perfect chance to complete the visuals.

“We planned to shoot the video in Paris, which is already done,” King Promise revealed.

He noted that unlike many of his songs he holds onto for months, this one felt too special to wait. “It’s one of those songs I just made and I was like okay, it should come now,” he said.

King Promise also clarified that he had already recorded his parts before flying to Atlanta. Davido only had to finish his verse.

“He was already working on so many things before I got there, but he was like, ‘Bro, let’s run your thing,’” he said.

To give fans a closer look at the journey, King Promise announced a 6–7 minute mini-documentary showing every step — from the Detroit meeting to the Atlanta studio session and the Paris shoot.

“You’ll see in the video where they were like, ‘Oh Charlie, tonight we’ve got to get out of here,’ because we both had things to attend to,” he added.

The collaboration is set to feature on King Promise’s upcoming album and fans across Africa are already buzzing for its release.
