Kisa Gbekle: Motherhood doesn’t mean giving up your career

After stepping away from the spotlight to raise her son, Enam who is now almost five years old, Ghanaian actress and producer Kisa Gbekle says her experience has proven that women can thrive both as mothers and professionals when they plan intentionally and have the right support.

Speaking to Graphic Showbiz on Monday, December 1, Kisa opened up about navigating life as a mother and an entertainer, stressing that neither role has to limit the other.

According to the Thank God It’s Friday producer, the long-held belief that women must sacrifice their ambitions to raise children is outdated and harmful. She called for more flexibility and empathy within the industry to help women balance their personal lives with their careers.

“Motherhood is the greatest thing that has ever happened to me,” she said. “I wanted to be fully present during the early days of my child’s life, but that didn’t mean walking away from showbiz. I simply prioritised bonding and the routines that matter most in a baby’s first months.

“My schedule as an actress is demanding, but with proper planning, you can balance everything. When you organise yourself well and have the right people supporting you, there’s no need to abandon your career.”

Although she has been off screen for about three years largely to care for her son, Kisa emphasised that stepping back was a personal choice not because she was incapable of managing both responsibilities.

“I know my stance may seem contradictory, especially since I took time off,” she admitted. “But that pause was something I personally wanted, not because balancing both roles was impossible.

“I could have continued acting if I chose to. I’m saying this because I don’t want my female colleagues to think motherhood means giving up their dreams. Look at Nigerian star Omotola she is a wife, a mother of four and still thriving in her acting career. So what excuse do I have as a single mother of one?”

During her time away from acting, Kisa ventured into new business opportunities, including a fishing enterprise in Togo. Now, she says she is ready to return to the screen with renewed energy and several upcoming projects in motion.

“I’m coming back stronger, more focused and more inspired. I want women to know that motherhood isn’t a setback it’s a new chapter. You can pursue your dreams and be a great mother at the same time,” she noted.

Kisa Gbekle is known for her roles in productions such as Accra Runs, Accra Hustlers, 8PM, Stand By Me, and the TV series The Miser.
