Ghana’s iconic Highlife music has earned a historic global recognition as it has officially been inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
UNESCO Ghana announced the milestone on December 10 via its X (formerly Twitter) page, celebrating the genre’s enduring influence and cultural significance.
According to UNESCO Ghana, the inscription represents “a monumental recognition of Ghana’s musical genius, culture, and global influence.”
The organisation extended congratulations to all culture bearers, creators and communities who continue to preserve and promote Highlife music.
Highlife, which blends traditional Ghanaian rhythms with jazz, brass band sounds and Western instruments, has shaped the nation’s musical identity for decades. Its inscription on the Intangible Cultural Heritage list places it among globally valued cultural expressions that must be safeguarded for future generations.
This recognition is expected to boost efforts to document, teach, and sustain Highlife music across Ghana and beyond, while reinforcing its status as one of Africa’s most influential musical traditions.
The announcement has been met with excitement from cultural institutions, musicians and the entertainment community, who view the achievement as a major win for Ghanaian arts on the international stage.
