Sheba Awuah-Darko, President of the Marian Global Concern for Women and Children, has appealed to the public to support a Christmas and New Year concert aimed at empowering vulnerable women and children.

The Charity Concert dubbed R&B Under the Stars, is scheduled for 30th December 2025 at the Accra Polo Club.

Proceeds from the event will support New Horizon Special School, Nsawam Orthopaedic Training Centre, and Mother Ignacia Social Action Centre, with a focus on sustainable empowerment initiatives that promote independence and long-term impact.

In an interview at the New Horizon Special School, Madam Awuah-Darko described Christmas as a season rooted in love, sacrifice, and compassion, noting that it reflects the true Christian calling to care for one another.

She explained that the birth of Christ symbolises the ultimate act of sacrifice and reminds believers of the importance of sharing love, especially with the most vulnerable.

“As someone who leads a group of women dedicated to supporting vulnerable women and children, the work being done at New Horizon Special School aligns closely with my own charity efforts,” she said.

She emphasised that empowering women and children has a ripple effect on families and communities.

“Supporting a vulnerable woman means supporting her entire family and giving her children a better chance at life. In the same way, equipping children with skills gives them a real opportunity to become independent,” she added.

Madam Awuah-Darko praised the creativity and craftsmanship of students at New Horizon Special School after visiting its craft shop, describing their work as impressive and full of potential.

She highlighted the patience, diligence, and attention to detail demonstrated through activities such as sewing, weaving, knitting, and crocheting, noting that the quality of the products reflects what is possible when children with special needs are given the right opportunities.

She further noted that the school’s craft shop could serve as a sustainable income source, enabling students to support themselves while reducing the institution’s reliance on external donations.

Encouraging public participation, she urged Ghanaians to attend the concert on 30th December, explaining that proceeds will be used to expand the school’s craft programme through improved access to materials, tools, and modern techniques.

Addressing the broader challenges of fundraising, Madam Awuah-Darko acknowledged that because of our extended family system many Ghanaians already shoulder large financial responsibilities in their daily lives, which can make additional appeals difficult.

However, she stressed that people are more willing to give when they are assured their contributions will lead to long-term change.

“People want to know that their support will truly improve a situation and help beneficiaries stand on their own feet,” she said. “That is why initiatives like the craft programme at New Horizon are so important.”

She urged the public to purchase tickets in large numbers and attend the R&B Under the Stars concert on 30th December 2025, noting that ticket proceeds will directly support New Horizon Special School and the other beneficiary institutions.

She concluded by emphasising that the true essence of Christmas lies in expressing love through action. “I hope people will support massively by purchasing tickets and turning up on the 30th of December to help make a meaningful difference in the lives of vulnerable members of our community,” she said.
