Edem: Patience and compatibility guided my marriage

Ghanaian rapper and entrepreneur Ayigbe Edem has shared rare personal insights into his decision to settle down with his wife, revealing that patience, compatibility and thoughtful guidance played key roles in their journey to marriage.

Speaking in an interview with popular YouTuber and blogger Zion Felix on January 6, 2026, Edem was asked what influenced his decision to marry after four years of dating. The Toto hitmaker explained that the turning point was not pressure from society or the fact that they had a child together, but rather the conscious decision to be sure of their bond.

According to Edem, when he and his partner started dating, they already had their first child, and his partner was still in school. During that period, advice from his father-in-law proved pivotal.

“Her father said something — don’t marry because you have a child. You should marry when you really know that you are compatible and want to marry,” Edem recounted.

He explained that this advice gave them the space to grow, understand each other better and reflect deeply on their relationship without rushing into marriage. Over time, that period of reflection helped them realise they were ready to build a complete family together.

“He gave us time to sit, think and know each other, and then he decided yes, we think it’s a good time to make a complete family,” Edem said, adding that the absence of pressure made the decision more meaningful.

Touching on marriage traditions, the musician emphasised that there is no one-size-fits-all approach to marriage. Whether customary or ordinance, Edem believes the most important factor is mutual agreement and comfort between partners.

“Marriage is between two people. If you discuss it and agree on customary or ordinance, it’s okay. Whatever both partners are comfortable with is what matters,” he noted.

Encouraging couples to define marriage on their own terms, Edem added that even a simple vow exchange is valid if both partners are satisfied with that choice.

“If you guys just want to go someplace, say your vows and you are comfortable, run with it,” he said.
