Bright Aweh, the prime suspect in the murder of Immigration Officer Stephen King Amoah, has publicly denied the charges levelled against him, insisting on his innocence as the trial continues.

Aweh, who is standing trial alongside Thomas Zigah, appeared before the Adabraka District Court on Monday, January 19, 2026, where he maintained that he had no hand in Amoah’s death.

Escorted by police officers after the court proceedings, Aweh briefly addressed journalists as he was being ushered into a police vehicle, expressing confidence that he would be vindicated.

“I didn’t kill my friend. I am not a murderer. I will pass through this painfully for justice to be served,” he said.

The two accused persons are facing charges of conspiracy to commit murder and murder in connection with the death of Amoah, who went missing on July 3, 2025, after leaving his home to meet Aweh at Ashongman Estates.

Amoah’s body was discovered days later in a drain at Abom Junction, sparking widespread public outrage and a police investigation.

According to police, the meeting between Amoah and Aweh was allegedly arranged following WhatsApp exchanges that included images of bundles of cash, purportedly sent to settle a debt.

Aweh has claimed that he handed Amoah GH¢500,000, stating that GH¢200,000 was meant to clear a debt, while the remaining amount was to be kept by the deceased. However, police say inconsistencies in his account raised suspicion.

At a press briefing on August 4, 2025, the Director-General of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), COP Lydia Yaako Donkor, revealed that Amoah left his home on the night of July 3 after reportedly receiving photos of cash from Aweh, who had promised to repay a debt.

When Amoah failed to return home and his phone became unreachable, a missing person report was filed on July 4, 2025. Subsequent investigations led to Aweh’s arrest on July 6, 2025.

Police further allege that a search of Aweh’s residence uncovered a bloodstained camouflage fabric and a fufu pestle wrapped in polythene, as well as signs suggesting an attempted cleanup.

Despite the alleged evidence, Aweh continues to deny any involvement in Amoah’s death, insisting that he is innocent as the trial proceeds.

The court is expected to continue hearing the case at its next sitting.
