A level 300 top-up journalism student of the University of Media, Arts and Communication–Institute of Journalism (UniMAC-IJ) has died after allegedly being knocked down by a vehicle near the institution’s South Legon (Dzorwulu) campus.

The deceased has been identified as Nelson Blay Nakotey, a third-year top-up journalism student.

Sources say the incident is believed to have occurred on Saturday, January 17, 2026, when the student visited the Dzorwulu campus to resolve an issue with his student portal. According to the source, Nakotey had paid a significant portion of his school fees but was unable to register his courses because the portal indicated he still owed the university.

“He went to the Dzorwulu campus to make enquiries about why he could not register his courses,” a source familiar with the situation said.

Details surrounding the accident remain unclear. However, sources say his body was reportedly identified on Tuesday, January 20, 2026, after relatives had been unable to locate him for days.

“There was confusion because the family could not find him. It was on Tuesday that they recognised his body and confirmed it was Nelson,” the source said.

It is not yet known whether the student was rushed to a hospital after the accident or how he was identified. Attempts to obtain official confirmation from the family have so far been unsuccessful, as relatives are yet to release detailed information on the circumstances surrounding his death.

Meanwhile, some students of UniMAC-IJ have raised renewed safety concerns about the stretch of road near the South Legon campus, describing it as dangerous and difficult to cross, especially during peak traffic hours.

Several students say they have experienced close calls while crossing the road and are calling on authorities to improve pedestrian safety in the area.

University authorities are yet to issue an official statement on the incident. This story remains developing, and updates will be provided as more information becomes available.
