The Koo Nimo Legacy Foundation has announced the 95th birthday celebration of legendary Ghanaian musician and cultural icon Agya Koo Nimo, born Daniel Boamponsem on January 27, 1931.

Agya Koo Nimo, a revered traditional music virtuoso, cultural ambassador and UNESCO Living Human Treasure is widely celebrated for his lifelong contributions to Ghana’s indigenous music traditions and his enduring influence on generations of musicians both locally and internationally.

In a statement issued by the Foundation, it disclosed that this year’s birthday will be observed in a solemn and private manner.

This decision, the Foundation explained is in line with the wishes of Agya Koo Nimo and his family and also in respect for tradition as the family mourns the passing of their daughter Akua Amponsah.

The Foundation has therefore appealed to media houses, well-wishers cultural stakeholders and the general public to observe the occasion in the same spirit of restraint and reverence.

Reflecting on the significance of Agya Koo Nimo’s life and legacy, the Foundation drew inspiration from one of his most profound songs, “Old Man Plants Coconut Tree,” which carries the message of selfless service and legacy-building.

“An old man plants a coconut tree, not for himself but for generations unborn,” the statement noted, describing the philosophy that has defined the icon’s life and work.

Despite the quiet nature of the birthday observance the Koo Nimo Legacy Foundation announced plans to roll out a series of commemorative activities throughout the year.

These initiatives will celebrate Agya Koo Nimo’s life, music, and lasting cultural impact through curated cultural programmes, educational engagements, and legacy-driven projects in Ghana and abroad.

The Foundation has extended an invitation to cultural institutions, music lovers, scholars, and the general public to join in the year-long celebrations, honouring a man whose contributions have left an indelible mark on Ghanaian culture and the global appreciation of traditional music.
