Veteran Ghanaian musician and dancer Akosua Agyapong has criticised the Ghana Music Rights Organisation (GHAMRO) in a video, raising serious concerns about the welfare of musicians in the country.
In the video sighted by Ghana Weekend on Monday February 2, she expressed deep grievances over what she described as systemic failures within GHAMRO.
She lamented the harsh conditions faced by many veteran musicians, revealing that some have reportedly died because they could not afford basic medication and healthcare, despite having contributed significantly to Ghana’s music industry.
According to her, the situation reflects a broader issue of musicians not benefiting adequately from the royalties generated from their work.
She alleged that certain individuals are profiting from the creative labour of musicians while the artistes themselves struggle to survive.
Agyapong also called on fellow musicians to rise and demand accountability, urging them not to remain silent while their rights are allegedly being undermined.
She stressed that musicians must collectively stand up to protect their intellectual property and livelihoods.
The veteran performer further stated that everyone who has served at GHAMRO must answer questions surrounding the management of funds. She made specific reference to past executives, particularly those who served around 2015, and mentioned veteran musician Obour, who was part of the leadership at the time. Akosua Agyapong alleged that funds meant for musicians may have been misused, a claim that has since sparked intense public debate.
