Ebo Taylor, the Ghanaian musical genius whose career helped shape the sound of modern African music, has died at the age of 90.

The news of his passing was broken on his official social media pages, prompting an outpouring of tributes from fans, musicians and cultural figures across the world.

A composer, bandleader, arranger and visionary whose influence spanned highlife, Afrobeat, jazz and funk, Taylor became one of the most respected figures in Ghana’s vibrant music scene and an inspiration to artists across continents.

Born Deroy Taylor in 1936 in Cape Coast, Ghana, Ebo Taylor began his career in the late 1950s, performing with seminal highlife ensembles such as the Stargazers and the Broadway Dance Band before forming his own groups and establishing himself as a defining voice in West African music.

Taylor was celebrated for fusing traditional Ghanaian rhythms with global musical styles. His guitar work, deeply rhythmic arrangements and fearless experimentation made him a sought-after collaborator from his early connections with Afrobeat pioneer Fela Kuti to his later influence on generations of musicians around the world.

His records celebrated for their rich grooves, inventive melodies and cross-genre appeal earned him a global following. Over a career spanning nearly seven decades, Taylor released landmark albums and continued performing well into his 80s. His music’s reach extended far beyond Ghana, with listeners often noting that his sound effortlessly bridged genres and eras.

Ebo Taylor marked a personal milestone by launching EboFest at the Alliance Française in Accra a celebration of his 90th birthday that brought together fellow musicians, young artists and fans in a tribute to his extraordinary contribution to music.

Beyond his recordings and performances, Taylor’s influence extended into mentoring young talent and shaping Ghana’s music industry. He remained a symbol of creativity and resilience, pushing musical boundaries and inspiring countless artists at home and abroad.

Tributes continue to pour in from across the music world as Ghana and the global music community mourn the loss of a man whose work helped define an era and whose rhythms will live on for generations.
