The government of Ghana has announced major renovations at the Accra International Conference Centre (AICC) and the State Banquet Hall as part of efforts to boost the country’s creative and event economy.
Speaking during the State of the Nation Address at the Parliament House on Friday, February 27, President John Mahama said the projects are aimed at positioning Ghana as West Africa’s premier destination for meetings, conferences, musical concerts, and other creative events.
“The original contractors of the centre, Energo Project Ghana Ltd, have conducted a structural integrity assessment at the request of the Office of the Chief of Staff and made recommendations for the facility’s renovation and refurbishment,” he said. “They will commence this work in the next few weeks.”
Mahama stressed that while the AICC is iconic, it alone is not enough for a country seeking to grow its creative sector.
“Working with the private sector, work will also commence this year on a befitting convention and creative events centre to position Ghana as West Africa’s leading hub for meetings, incentives, conferences, exhibitions, and creative events,” he added.
In addition to the AICC, the President announced plans to renovate the State Banquet Hall, which has been closed for several years.
“This year we will strengthen Ghana’s standing in major global and continental sporting events,” Mahama said, linking the renovations to broader efforts to promote tourism, culture, and national pride.
The renovations and new projects are part of the government’s wider strategy to use infrastructure improvements to support Ghana’s creative industries and enhance the country’s profile as a leading hub for international events.
