President John Mahama has announced a major financial injection into Ghana’s creative economy, revealing that government has allocated GH₵20 million to the film industry and an additional GH₵20 million to other creative arts sectors.
The announcement was made on Friday, February 27, during his State of the Nation Address delivered at the Parliament House.
According to the President, the funding is aimed at strengthening Ghana’s film industry, including popular local movie hubs such as Kumawood and Ghallywood, as well as other emerging creative clusters across the country.
“This GH₵20 million is going to the film sector alone to support Kumawood, Ghallywood and all the ‘woods’,” Mahama stated, expressing confidence that the financial support would significantly enhance production capacity and global competitiveness.
He added that a further GH₵20 million allocation has been set aside for other creative sectors, describing the investment as a deliberate effort to strengthen human creativity as a pillar of economic growth.
“I believe that this injection of money will bolster our creative sectors,” the President said.
President Mahama also pledged his personal commitment to championing the growth of the industry, assuring stakeholders and the Ministry of Tourism of his direct involvement in promoting Ghana’s creative and tourism sectors both locally and internationally.
“I will be your personal ambassador for the promotion of tourism and the creative sector,” he assured.
The funding commitments and infrastructure plans underscore government’s strategy to use culture, film, and creative expression as key drivers of tourism, job creation, and economic diversification.
