What began as a commercial surrogacy agreement reportedly worth GH₵300,000 has spiralled into a dramatic dispute after a surrogate mother allegedly left with a newborn baby following delivery, despite having already received GH₵100,000 as part payment under the arrangement alongside other consolation add-ons.
The commissioning parents, a Ghanaian woman based in Germany and her Ghana-based partner, are said to have entered into the agreement covering full medical care, accommodation, feeding support and a total compensation package of GH₵300,000, with the remaining balance expected to be paid according to the agreed terms.
Accounts circulating on Crime Check GH and other media platforms suggest that tensions began building during the pregnancy, with claims that the surrogate made additional requests beyond the core financial agreement.
Among the items reportedly requested were a rented place to stay, a mobile phone, financial assistance toward acquiring a tricycle (aboboyaa), and specific food demands including fried rice and pizza.
Sources allege that several of these requests were met in an effort to maintain stability throughout the pregnancy.
The situation reportedly reached a turning point after delivery at the 37 Military Hospital in Accra, where the surrogate allegedly left with the newborn instead of handing the child over to the commissioning parents as stipulated in their agreement.
Efforts to resolve the matter privately are said to have broken down, with the case now fuelling intense public debate about contract enforcement, emotional attachment, and the legal grey areas surrounding commercial surrogacy in Ghana.
While details continue to emerge, the dispute has reignited broader conversations about the need for clearer regulatory frameworks governing surrogacy arrangements, as questions over parental rights, contractual obligations and the welfare of the child take centre stage.
