Female music duo Lali X Lola has formally appealed to the board of the Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) to reinstate the “Group of the Year” category, which was omitted from this year’s nominations.
In a letter addressed to the TGMA Board, the duo expressed concern over the decision, acknowledging the Board’s position that there may not be enough qualifying groups to sustain the category.
However, they argued that removing the award creates a self-perpetuating problem: the absence of the category discourages the formation and growth of music groups, which are already more complex to manage compared to solo artistes.
The duo emphasised that music groups bring a unique dynamic to Ghana’s music industry, blending diverse talents, fostering collaboration and creating cultural moments that often transcend individual artistry.
Maintaining the category, the group argues, would encourage the development and sustainability of group acts while sending a strong signal of support to emerging collaborative talents.
“Award platforms such as TGMA play a critical role not only in recognising excellence but also in shaping industry behaviour and growth,” the letter stated.
Lali X Lola concluded the appeal by urging the Board to reconsider its decision, noting that reinstating the “Group of the Year” category would preserve an important aspect of Ghana’s musical heritage and contribute to a more competitive and vibrant industry.
The duo expressed hope that the TGMA Board would give the appeal due consideration, reinforcing support for both existing and emerging music groups in the country.
