Rapper Pappy Kojo has sparked fresh debate in Ghana’s music scene after boldly claiming that the best rappers in Ghana come from the West Side, particularly Takoradi, and not Accra.
Speaking in an interview with Headless YouTuber, the “Realer No” hitmaker explained why he has been actively pushing projects aimed at promoting talents from that part of the country.
When asked about his ongoing efforts to spotlight West Side artistes and whether more projects are in the pipeline, Pappy Kojo doubled down on his belief in their superiority.
“Bro, I feel like the best rappers are in West Side,” he said. “I dare the best rapper in Accra—take them there, they’ll be lashed.”
The rapper, known for consistently representing Takoradi, described his experiences witnessing local talents perform as amazing, highlighting their unique choice of words and deep lyrical ability.
According to him, the rappers from the West Side stay true to raw lyricism rather than following modern trends.
“They’re really, really lyrical. They don’t do none of that melodic, mumbled stuff—nah. It’s bars to bars, like I’m tearing your head off,” he noted.
He also shared a nostalgic moment during a recent visit, where he heard a term, “hootey”—commonly used in the past—which surprised him and reinforced his appreciation for the region’s authenticity and cultural retention in rap.
