Public Relations Officer for the Telecel Ghana Music Awards, Robert Klah, has clarified why this year’s ceremony will be held at the Palms Convention Centre instead of the Grand Arena.
Speaking in an interview with GhanaWeb posted on YouTube on Wednesday, April 29, Klah explained that organisers had anticipated uncertainty around the Grand Arena early in the planning stages.
According to him, when the event date was first announced, organisers intentionally left out the venue because discussions regarding the Grand Arena were still ongoing.
“At the beginning of the year, when we released the date, we indicated that the venue would be communicated later,” he said, noting that information from managers of the Grand Arena suggested that key arrangements were still pending.
Despite the uncertainty, Klah said the team remained hopeful the venue would become available, while quietly exploring alternative locations.
“As time went on, we started looking at other options, but many of the venues reviewed did not meet the standard we’ve built over the years,” he explained.
He outlined several critical considerations, including accessibility, parking, crowd flow, red carpet setup, and overall guest experience—elements he said are central to maintaining the prestige of the awards scheme.
“We’ve elevated the red carpet experience in recent years, and we want to either improve or at least maintain that standard,” he added.
Klah disclosed that the Palms Convention Centre had always been a backup plan, even though it comes with limitations, particularly in terms of capacity.
“Our plan B was the Palms Convention Centre. It’s not the most suitable, especially when you consider capacity, but it became the most viable option available,” he said.
On why the Grand Arena ultimately became unavailable, Klah declined to provide specific details, stating only that the decision rests with the venue’s owners.
“The crux of the matter is that the owners want their place for their own use,” he said.
This year’s TGMA is expected to maintain its signature production quality despite the venue change, with organisers promising to adapt creatively to the new space.
