Catholic Bishops condemn Karnival Kingdom Festival, demand probe

What was billed as a vibrant celebration of music, culture and diaspora connection has now become one of the most talked-about entertainment events in Ghana, but for very different reasons.

The maiden edition of the Karnival Kingdom Festival, held in Accra from April 22 to 28, delivered high-energy experiences with a mix of Caribbean soca and African heritage.

From sunrise fetes and themed parties to beach events and a grand parade at Labadi Beach Hotel, the festival drew partygoers and performers from across the diaspora.

The event featured a packed itinerary including Jouvert celebrations, “All White” and retro-themed parties, DJ sets, and cultural tours such as visits to Elmina Castle.

But beyond the music, colour and cultural fusion, the festival has stirred controversy over some of its more provocative moments.

The Ghana Catholic Bishops’ Conference has publicly condemned aspects of the event, particularly reports of public nudity, describing them as inconsistent with Ghanaian values and legal standards.

The Bishops’ Conference, in a press statement released on Monday, May 4, called for a full investigation into how the event was organised and managed, including the role of security agencies.

Their reaction has added a new layer to the conversation, shifting attention from the festival’s entertainment value to broader questions about cultural boundaries, regulation and artistic freedom.

While some see the Karnival Kingdom festival as a bold step in positioning Ghana as a global entertainment and tourism hub, others may argue that certain expressions crossed the line, sparking concerns about public decency and oversight.

The conversation is now extending beyond the festival grounds, with calls for clearer guidelines on event permits and a national dialogue on the limits of cultural expression in entertainment.
