The Nigerian film industry is mourning the loss of popular Nollywood actor Alexx Ekubo, who reportedly died on Monday, May 11, 2026, after a prolonged battle with cancer. He was 40 years old.
News of his death surfaced on Tuesday after fellow actor Godwin Nnadiekwe shared an emotional tribute on Instagram, describing Ekubo as a “rare soul” whose passing has left colleagues and fans devastated.
“I’m struggling to find the words. This news has truly broken me. Nollywood has lost a rare soul, and I’m lost for words because this wasn’t the plan, Alexx Ekubo,” Nnadiekwe wrote.
He added: “To think you already prepared your will , it’s a heartbreak I can’t quite describe. Rest well, my friend.”
Before news of his death emerged, concerns had grown among fans over the actor’s prolonged absence from the public eye and social media. Ekubo’s last known social media post was made in December 2024, shortly after reports of his broken engagement gained widespread attention online.

He later became a household name through his role in the Nollywood hit Weekend Getaway and went on to feature in several successful productions across the Nigerian film industry.
Following the announcement of his death, social media was flooded with tributes from fans, actors, and industry colleagues, many expressing shock and disbelief over the actor’s sudden passing.
