We would’ve still won with DopeNation in same category – Keche defends TGMA victory

Musician Keche Joshua has responded to criticism surrounding Keche’s victory in the Best Group category at the May 9 Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA), insisting the duo fully earned the recognition.

Speaking in an interview with Joy Prime on Thursday, May 14, Keche Joshua disclosed that some people had reached out to him after the awards, claiming the category was not competitive enough.

According to him, others argued that if music duo DopeNation had been nominated in the category, Keche would not have emerged as winners.

“Some people were saying it’s not competitive enough. That’s why we won it like that,” he said.

He, however, disagreed with the argument and clarified what he believes many people misunderstood about the award category.

“They were saying that if Dope Nation were to be in the category, they were going to win. And I’m like, it will not be a group song of the year. It will be the Best Group of the Year.”

Drawing comparisons to gospel categories, he said people often confuse recognition for a specific song with an artiste’s overall activity and impact.

“This is not the group song of the year. This is the Best  Group of the Year,” he stressed.

Keche Joshua pointed to the group’s consistency and visibility throughout the year as proof that they deserved the award.

According to him, Keche maintained an active schedule with frequent performances and appearances across the country.

“We were actively everywhere last year. Keche, back-to-back. Everywhere. It started from September 6, where every week, there were two events, three events,” he said.

He added that the momentum continued through the festive season and into the new year, with performances in places including Takwa.

“So actively, Keche was fantastic last year,” he noted.

The musician further stated that, regardless of the competition, Keche still would have come out on top.

“So even if it were Keche, R2Bees, or DopeNation, Keche was still going to win.
