Kuami Eugene: I want to surpass Daddy Lumba’s legendary status

Award-winning musician Kuami Eugene says he is determined to build a music legacy that will one day surpass the legendary status of highlife icon Daddy Lumba.

Speaking on the Late Afternoon Show on TV3 on Monday, May 18, the singer reflected on his consistency in the music industry and explained that despite his success, he still considers himself far from his ultimate destination.

“I’m not where I want to be at all,” Kuami Eugene stated. “I still think I’m nowhere close to Daddy Lumba or Amakye Dede. I see myself as still being in my preamble, like I just started.”

The “Angela” hitmaker noted that his hunger to achieve more is what keeps him motivated to continuously release music and compete creatively with both emerging and established artistes.

According to him, he still approaches music with the mentality of a newcomer despite already being one of Ghana’s most successful musicians.

“I see myself as a New Artiste of the Year,” he said. “I still make music like I just came.”

Kuami Eugene further disclosed that his long-term ambition is not just to reach the heights attained by Ghanaian music legends but to go beyond them.

“I want to surpass that point,” he said while speaking about Daddy Lumba’s influence and legacy.

The musician referenced the outpouring of tributes and international attention that followed Daddy Lumba’s passing, describing the late highlife legend as Ghana’s equivalent of global music icon Elvis Presley.

“When Lumba passed, we had white people coming down. That’s our own Elvis Presley,” he said.

Kuami Eugene explained that the desire to leave behind a lasting impact is the reason he continues to write and produce a large volume of music.

“That’s why I’m writing a lot of songs and producing a lot of songs. I’m doing my best because we won’t be here forever,” he noted.

He added that while life is temporary, every artiste must strive to leave a meaningful contribution before their time is up.

“But before we leave here, we’ll play our part,” he concluded.
