Peter Sedufia: Poor distribution greatest challenge to Ghana’s film industry

Filmmaker Peter Sedufia says improving film distribution is the one major change he would make if allowed to transform Ghana’s movie industry.

In an interview with GhanaWeekend on Wednesday, May 20, on the sidelines of the launch of the Film Development Fund by the National Film Authority in Accra, Peter Sedufia identified distribution as a critical gap in the local film ecosystem, noting that it remains one of the biggest barriers preventing films from reaching wider audiences and achieving commercial success.

“If I had to change one thing in the Ghanaian film industry to be better, it would be access to distribution,” he said.

According to him, producing high-quality films alone does not guarantee success if filmmakers are unable to effectively market and distribute their work.

“Distribution has been the biggest challenge of our industry because making a good film is just not enough,” he stated.

The filmmaker explained that even well-produced films risk fading away if there are no systems in place to get them to the right audiences.

“Because if you can make a very good film and you are not able to sell it, it’s gone,” he added.

Peter Sedufia noted that Ghana lacks professionals and structures dedicated to taking films beyond production and placing them on international platforms and markets.

“We don’t have so many people in the country who will carry your film from your studio to the international platform or to the market to sell it for you,” he explained.

The filmmaker further stated that if he had the power to implement change, he would focus on strengthening distribution systems to ensure films reach audiences and generate value.

“If I had the will, I would change that. I would introduce more distribution to the system and make sure that things work according to plan,” he added.

Peter Sedufia’s remarks come amid ongoing conversations on the future of Ghana’s movie industry following the launch of the Film Development Fund, which stakeholders hope will address long-standing challenges in the sector.
