Film director and writer Kofi Asamoah has urged Ghanaians to deliberately support and promote local films if the country’s movie industry is to grow and compete globally.

In an exclusive interview with GhanaWeekend on Wednesday, May 20, Kofi Asamoah said audiences must become more intentional about consuming and promoting Ghanaian content.

“We can get to it. We should, as Ghanaians, be intentional about supporting and promoting our own,” he said.

The filmmaker acknowledged that while some local productions may not always meet audience expectations, there are several Ghanaian filmmakers producing quality content that deserves support.

“Yes, it is true that some filmmakers do not make films as good as we want but I can assure you that there are many other filmmakers who are making global standard productions,” he stated.

According to him, many filmmakers in Ghana are creating high-quality films rooted in authentic local stories and culture.

“There are many other filmmakers here in Ghana who are making good quality films telling our traditional, local, authentic Ghanaian stories,” he added.

Kofi Asamoah stressed that audiences have a major role to play in helping these productions succeed through patronage and positive engagement.

“And so the only way to support these good films is to patronise them, is to appreciate them, is to give good comments and reviews on the films when we see them,” he said.

He further encouraged Ghanaians to move away from the persistent narrative that local films are not good enough.

The filmmaker also pointed to social media algorithms as a tool that can help increase visibility for local content if audiences actively engage with Ghanaian films.

“The algorithm on social media will always show you what to watch more. And I can bet you that if you watch more Ghanaian films, the algorithm will show you more,” he said.
