‘We’re being unfair to ourselves’ – Peter Sedufia on Ghana-Nigeria film comparisons

Filmmaker Peter Sedufia says while comparisons between Ghana and Nigeria’s movie industries are unavoidable, Ghanaians should avoid making unfair assessments that ignore differences in scale and population.

Speaking exclusively to GhanaWeekend on Wednesday, May 20, Peter Sedufia said the constant comparison between the two industries has become a permanent conversation but argued that the context behind the numbers often gets overlooked.

According to him, one major factor in the conversation is the number of films produced annually in both countries.

“I think Ghanaians are making films, but how much of it? What is the scale of films we are making per year? What is the scale of films Nigerians are churning out per year?” he questioned.

He acknowledged that Nigeria undoubtedly produces more films than Ghana but insisted that the comparison should take population size into account.

“If you compare those, you will realise that Nigerians are churning out more films than Ghanaians,” he stated.

However, Peter Sedufia argued that comparing the two countries without considering ratios creates a misleading picture.

“But sometimes we are unjustly compared to ourselves,” he added.

He stressed that expecting Ghana to match Nigeria’s output numbers directly would be unrealistic.

“But if you think Nigerians are making 60 films per year and Ghanaians are also supposed to be making 60 films per year, then that is a very wrong comparison,” he said.

The filmmaker further urged Ghanaians to acknowledge the progress being made within the local industry rather than focus only on shortcomings.

“I think that we shouldn’t be too hard on ourselves. We are doing our best. It can always be better, it can get better, but let’s appreciate the little progress we make as we try to improve upon them,” he said.

Peter Sedufia’s comments add to the ongoing debate about the growth of Ghana’s film industry and how it measures up against other film markets across Africa.
