Popular comic actor Ebenezer Akwasi Antwi, popularly known as Dr Likee or Akabenezer, has apologised following the backlash over the outfit he wore to the 27th Telecel Ghana Music Awards (TGMA) red carpet.
The actor came under heavy criticism on social media after appearing at the event in a material shirt, knickers and locally made African slippers, with many questioning his fashion choice for the prestigious awards ceremony.
Speaking in an interview with blogger Plus 1 on May 21, Dr Likee said while the outfit reflected his personal style, he did not want the criticism to lead to insults among fans and critics.
“We thank all Ghanaians. A very big thank you to UK fans. They have been so supportive,” he said ahead of his show in the United Kingdom.
According to him, the criticism surrounding his TGMA appearance unexpectedly helped draw attention to his upcoming event dubbed “Dr Likee Live – A Night of Comedy, Music & Stage Play”, scheduled for Friday, May 22, at the Indigo at The O2 in London.
“Now that I’ve seen their love for me, I will give them a time of their life on the show. And about the outfit I wore for the TGMA, it’s my own cup of tea. But let no one insult anyone, it’s a game. I apologise, none of my fans should verbally attack anyone,” he stated.
Dr Likee further noted that the controversy had worked in his favour, saying the public conversations around his outfit helped increase awareness about the UK show.
“Had they not criticised my outfit, people would not have heard about the show. It’s part of showbiz,” he added.
