Nigerian Afrobeats superstar Davido has sparked reactions on social media after playfully declaring himself Ghanaian ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
The award-winning singer made the remark on Tuesday, June 2, when he reposted a video snippet of President John Dramani Mahama discussing Ghana’s plans for fan support at the upcoming tournament.
In the video, President Mahama explained that the government would not sponsor or transport Ghanaian supporters to the World Cup due to the high cost involved.
He noted that with the tournament being hosted across three countries, funding such trips would place an unnecessary burden on the state.
Instead, the president indicated that Ghana would count on its citizens living abroad to provide strong support for the Black Stars during the competition.
Reacting to the statement, Davido shared the video on his Instagram Story and added a brief but attention-grabbing caption: “I am Ghanaian for the World Cup.”
The post quickly generated buzz among football fans, many of whom interpreted the comment as the Nigerian star’s way of backing Ghana’s national team ahead of football’s biggest tournament.
Davido’s lighthearted declaration comes as excitement continues to build around the Black Stars’ preparations for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
