Joey B has opened up about the reason behind his prolonged absence from the music scene, disclosing that an undiagnosed asthma condition significantly affected his health and career.

Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV on Wednesday, June 10, he disclosed that he struggled with recurring health issues for years without knowing the actual cause.

According to him, he often mistook the symptoms for malaria, sinusitis, or general fatigue, unaware that he was battling asthma.

“I got sick. I didn’t know I had asthma. Before then, I used to think it was malaria or sinusitis because I would feel weak and get tired easily. Sometimes I couldn’t even breathe properly.”

Joey recalled that around 2019 or 2020, a doctor finally diagnosed him with asthma after noticing his symptoms.

He added that the revelation came as a surprise, although there was a family history of the condition.

“A doctor asked me if I knew about asthma. My dad also had asthma, although he says he’s healed now, so that’s when I found out what was really happening,” he said.

He noted that the diagnosis forced him to take a step back from music to focus on his health and recovery.

The artiste further disclosed that spending long hours in recording studios worsened his condition, as the environment often triggered his asthma attacks.

“What was triggering it was the studio environment. I practically lived in the studio and slept there. The more I stayed there, the worse it got, so I had to take proper care of myself.”

Despite the challenges, he emphasised that quitting music was never an option.

“Did I ever think about stopping music? Oh, hell no. I just needed my strength back.”

The musician’s revelation sheds light on the personal struggles he faced behind the scenes during his time away from the spotlight, while reassuring fans that his passion for music never faded despite the health setback.
