Musician Joey B has shared the hilarious and unexpected story behind how he got the stage name that has become synonymous with his music career.
Speaking in an interview on 3Music TV on Wednesday, June 10, the rapper disclosed that the nickname originated from an encounter with a foreigner while he was still a student.
According to Joey B, he was playing basketball at school when an American man approached him looking for the school’s administration block.
Out of the many students around, the man singled him out and called him “Joey” despite never having met him before.
“This man said he was looking for the administration in my school and then, out of all the plenty boys there, he pointed at me and said, ‘You, Joey.”
Confused by the unfamiliar name, Joey B said he approached the man to find out what he wanted.
“I went to him and asked, how can I help you?’ He asked me to show him where the administration block was.”
The musician said the encounter became even more memorable because the man was playful throughout their walk to the administration block.
“He didn’t just ask for directions. He insisted that I walk with him, and I remember he even held my hand and swung it while we were walking. I was small then, so I just went along with it.”
After helping the visitor, Joey B finally asked why he had called him “Joey.”
“I asked him, ‘Why did you call me Joey?’ and he replied, ‘Because you look like a Joey.”
The nickname quickly caught on among his friends, who began calling him Joey as well.
Curious about the meaning of the name, the artiste said he later looked it up in a dictionary and discovered an amusing definition.
“I went to check what Joey meant, and I found out it’s a baby kangaroo,” he said.
