International music star and entrepreneur Akon has disclosed that Nigerian Afrobeats icon Wizkid was the first artiste he ever signed, describing the singer as a natural star from the moment they met.
Akon recalled meeting Wizkid when the singer was just 13 years old and immediately recognising his immense potential.
“Wizkid was the first artiste that I signed,” Akon said. “He was 13. When he walked into the room, you just knew this kid was going to be something big.”
According to Akon, Wizkid stood out not only because of his presence but also because of his musical abilities at a young age.
“He had an amazing voice. He was also writing his own little songs at that time.”
The Senegalese-American musician explained that Wizkid was being managed by Nigerian singer and entrepreneur Banky W when they first met.
Akon said he later partnered with Banky W to sign the young talent, a move that would eventually help launch one of Africa’s most successful music careers.
“He was managed and run by a guy named Banky W at the time; that’s who I partnered up with to sign with.”
Wizkid has since grown into one of Africa’s biggest music exports, earning global recognition through chart-topping projects, international collaborations, and multiple awards. His rise has played a significant role in the worldwide popularity of Afrobeats, making Akon’s early belief in his talent a notable chapter in the genre’s history.
“Wizkid was the first artiste I signed, he was 13-year-old at that time, he was managed by a guy called Banky W. When he walked into a room, you could tell he’s a Star.”
