Decoding the Afrofusion magic of Joseph Matthew’s new hit ‘Walk’

UK-based Ghanaian sensation Joseph Matthew has never been one to let the industry box him in.

Following the massive international success of his 2025 reggae-infused hit “Love In You”, Joseph Matthew has returned with “Walk” (released July 7, 2026).

The release is particularly fascinating because it arrives right on the heels of the artist’s bold public declaration: “I am not a gospel musician; I am an Afrofusion artiste.”

Arguing that “gospel” is a message of Good News rather than a sonic genre, Joseph Matthew uses “Walk” to prove exactly what he means.

The track is a masterclass in blending spiritual substance with secular-grade, border-crossing production.

At its core, “Walk” is an infectious Afrocentric journey. While his previous hits like “My Story” and “Blessed” leaned heavily on urban highlife and direct Afro-gospel templates, “Walk” showcases a more mature, global sound.

Beautifully engineered by award-winning sound engineer Francis Osei, the track’s foundation is built on deep, abstruse African percussion layered with contemporary synth-pop elements and a subtle, rhythmic guitar strum that feels both wistful and incredibly pristine.

There is a distinct groove here that demands movement—proving the multiple-award-winning Afrofusion artiste’s point that you can deliver a divine message without sacrificing a beat that belongs on mainstream radio playlists.

Lyrically, “Walk” does not shy away from the spiritual conviction that defined Joseph Matthew’s earlier work.

True to his belief that music is his “divine calling and personal ministry,” the song acts as a practical anthem for faith in action.

The message is simple yet profoundly sonorous: walking by faith, stepping through adversity, and trusting a higher power even when the path ahead is obscured.

Delivered with Joseph Matthew’s signature warm, abstruse, and commanding vocals, the lyrics are accessible enough for the casual listener while carrying the spiritual depth his core Christian audience expects.

The Verdict: 8.5/10

“Walk” is a triumphant step forward for Joseph Matthew. By shedding the restrictive “gospel” label and fully embracing his identity as an Afrofusion architect, he has crafted a track that feels liberated, rhythmically adventurous, and universally appealing.

It is a song that is just as comfortable playing in a nightclub as it is on a drive-time radio show in Accra or London.

If this single is any indication of his upcoming project, Joseph Matthew’s musical journey is only getting more exciting to watch.
