Nigerian actress Bambam Oluwamni, popularly known as Achalugo, has disclosed that she takes a natural approach to acting and only pushes herself beyond her comfort zone when a role specifically requires it.
Speaking on Channel One TV’s Breakfast Show on Thursday, July 23, the actress said she relies on her own personality and observations of people to bring her characters to life instead of overcomplicating her performances.
“To be fair, I just use everything. So my style of acting, except the character requires me to alter my personality entirely, I just use everything from people-watching and from who I am.”
According to Bambam, she prefers to keep her performances authentic and avoids doing “too much” unless directed otherwise.
“I try not to do too much, except when the director requires me to do that.”
The actress noted that some roles have challenged her to step outside her natural disposition. While she typically speaks softly and at a measured pace, she has had to portray characters who were outspoken, aggressive or intentionally disrespectful.
“There are a few stories that I have done where naturally I speak a bit slow and soft, where I had to speak very fast, or I had to be very rude.”
During the interview, the show’s hosts referenced one of her performances in which she portrayed a wife who was openly disrespectful to her husband, reportedly because of his financial struggles, highlighting the range of characters she has taken on.
Bambam’s comments offer insight into her acting philosophy, which centres on authenticity while remaining flexible enough to meet the creative vision of directors and the demands of diverse roles.
