Abdul-Samed Sulemana, popularly known as Awuche and widely believed to be Ghana’s tallest man, has died at the Tamale Teaching Hospital, weeks after businessman and philanthropist Ibrahim Mahama pledged to cover the cost of his medical treatment.
According to reports, the 32-year-old passed away in the early hours of Monday, July 27, 2026, after battling complications associated with gigantism.
His death comes just weeks after Ibrahim Mahama responded to a public appeal by pledging to pay all his medical expenses to enable him to receive urgent specialised treatment.
Awuche’s health reportedly deteriorated due to complications from gigantism, prompting doctors at the Baptist Medical Centre (BMC) in Nalerigu to refer him to the Tamale Teaching Hospital for advanced medical care.
Upon his arrival at the referral facility, doctors initially recommended the amputation of his left leg after a severe infection caused significant tissue damage.
However, following a comprehensive reassessment by the medical team, the decision was reversed in favour of exploring alternative treatment options.
Despite efforts by healthcare professionals and the financial support pledged for his treatment, Awuche succumbed to his condition.
His passing has sparked an outpouring of grief on social media, with many Ghanaians paying tribute to his resilience and extending condolences to his family.
