Dancehall star Shatta Wale has disclosed the circumstances that led to the breakdown of his once-close friendship with Nigerian Grammy-winning artiste Burna Boy, blaming the fallout on false allegations spread by former members of his team.
Speaking on The Honest Bunch Podcast, Shatta Wale said Burna Boy was one of the few Nigerian artistes who personally reached out to him before visiting Ghana, asking him to pick him up from the airport.
According to the “On God” hitmaker, he welcomed Burna Boy with open arms, providing him with accommodation and cars and ensuring he was comfortable throughout his stay.
“I was treating Burna Boy in Ghana like a king,” Shatta Wale said. “I gave him a house, gave him cars, anything he needed. He wasn’t spending money in Ghana.”
However, Shatta Wale claimed that after dismissing several members of his management team, the disgruntled former associates allegedly embarked on a campaign to destroy his relationships with influential people.
According to him, the ex-team members falsely accused him of having affairs with the wives and girlfriends of some of his wealthy friends.
He alleged that one of those rumours reached Burna Boy, with the former associates claiming he had been involved with Burna Boy’s girlfriend during the Nigerian singer’s visit to Ghana.
“They told Burna Boy that I was sleeping with his girl he brought to Ghana, and he just believed it,” Shatta Wale said.
The dancehall musician explained that he only realised Burna Boy had believed the allegations after his repeated attempts to reach him went unanswered.
He said he even contacted Burna Boy’s mother, whom he described as family, hoping she would help him reconnect with the singer.
Reflecting on the breakdown of their friendship, Shatta Wale said he had always celebrated Burna Boy’s success and frequently sent him messages of encouragement as his career grew internationally.
“I still love him. I watch his streams and I’m proud of him. That’s my brother,” he said.
Although saddened that Burna Boy never allowed him to explain his side of the story, Shatta Wale said he has no ill feelings towards the African Giant.
“I thank God that God has put Burna somewhere, but it hurts me that he didn’t listen to me to explain what really happened. I could never do that to his girlfriend because he’s my brother.”
The award-winning artiste added that the experience has made him more cautious about friendships, saying he now keeps a very small circle of trusted people around him.
Despite the years of silence between them, Shatta Wale ended the interview with a heartfelt message for Burna Boy, maintaining that he still has love and respect for the Nigerian superstar and wishes him continued success.
