‘Being called cripple didn’t break me’ – Stonebwoy on battle with mockery

Stonebwoy has opened up about the emotional and physical challenges he endured because of his knee condition, disclosing that he has been mocked throughout his career but has refused to let the insults define him.

Speaking in an interview with BBC Africa, the award-winning artiste said being ridiculed over his disability has strengthened his resolve rather than broken his spirit.

“Opponents have called me a ‘cripple’ every day they do, and it doesn’t get to me,” Stonebwoy said. “For anybody to use that against you, it means they’re not in the right frame of mind. They don’t know better.”

The “Into the Future” hitmaker reflected on his difficult childhood, recalling how financial hardship often forced him out of school because he could not pay his fees.

According to him, he would walk long distances from Ashaiman to Tema Methodist Day Secondary School despite living with a stiff knee reinforced with metal implants.

“You have to walk some miles to school while having a stiff knee with metals inside,” he recalled. “So it toughens your mind. You have to have a different source of inspiration to be able to move.”

Stonebwoy said those experiences shaped his resilience and taught him to overcome obstacles that many people could not see.

He also spoke about the lack of awareness surrounding mental health, explaining that he often felt isolated while growing up because showing vulnerability was rarely accepted.

“If you show softness, mental health is not really addressed. That’s how I’ve always felt—that I was alone,” he said, adding that those experiences have made him more resilient.

In this industry, people will call you all sorts of names. They’ve called me ‘cripple’ for years, but it doesn’t get to me.When someone resorts to that,it says more about their mindset than it does about me.”-Stonebwoy pic.twitter.com/J0KSLJfAoi
