The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has disclosed that the government is adopting creative and innovative approaches to promote Ghanaian languages and culture among children, including the use of animated cartoons.
According to the minister, the initiative is being pursued through the Bureau of Ghana Languages (BGL) as part of broader efforts to preserve Ghana’s indigenous languages and ensure that younger generations remain connected to the country’s cultural heritage.
Speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, Dzifa Gomashie said the use of cartoons and animation would provide an engaging way of introducing children to Ghanaian languages, traditions and cultural values.
She explained that the government recognises the importance of mother-tongue preservation, particularly at a time when changing social trends and increased exposure to foreign languages could affect the ability of younger generations to speak and appreciate Ghanaian languages.
The minister noted that the government, through the Bureau of Ghana Languages, has already undertaken a number of activities aimed at encouraging Ghanaians to speak their indigenous languages and pass them on to children.
“In our efforts to preserve our mother tongue, the ministry, through BGL, marked the Ghana Languages Festival in July 2025. This annual event on our calendar is to educate Ghanaians on the need to speak our languages and pass same to our children as our parents did for us.
“We take the opportunity to invite you all to join the ministry every year on February 21 so that we celebrate this day in commemoration of the various languages that we have. The BGL is undertaking the animation of our Ghanaian languages and the rationale is to introduce our culture to Ghanaian children through cartoons.”
