The Minister for Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, Abla Dzifa Gomashie, has disclosed that the government of Ghana is partnering the People’s Republic of China to undertake the renovation and modernisation of the National Theatre.
The minister said the partnership forms part of government’s efforts to restore the National Theatre to a high standard and improve its capacity to serve as a major hub for the promotion and development of Ghanaian arts and culture.
Speaking at the government’s Accountability Series on Monday, August 10, Abla Dzifa Gomashie said a comprehensive assessment of the National Theatre was conducted in 2025 to determine the extent of work required to restore and modernise the facility.
She added that following discussions between the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and the Chinese government, a high-level delegation from China visited the facility to assess its infrastructure, functionality and technical requirements.
The assessment was intended to provide the basis for the proposed renovation and identify areas requiring intervention to improve the theatre’s overall condition and operations.
“The Government of Ghana and the People’s Republic of China, in supporting the Ministry in the renovation and modernisation of the National Theatre of Ghana, reaffirm China’s long-standing partnership with Ghana in the cultural sector. Following discussions with the Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts, and the Chinese Government, a high-level delegation from China undertook a critical assessment of the Theatre in 2025 to determine the proposed renovation.
“The intervention is to restore and modernise the Theatre’s infrastructure, improve it’s functionality and technical facilities to position the Theatre as a world-class theatre for the promotion of Ghanaian arts and culture. The Chinese side has assured Ghana of its cooperation to ensure that the National Theatre is maintained to the highest standards.”
