Singer and rapper Mohammed Ismail Sherif, popularly known as Black Sherif, has opened up about his experience of winning the coveted Artiste of the Year award at the Ghana Music Awards, describing the achievement as fulfilling while acknowledging that the excitement surrounding the honour is often short-lived.
Black Sherif, who has established himself as one of Ghana’s most prominent contemporary music acts, said receiving the award comes with an intense sense of accomplishment, particularly because he became the youngest artiste to win the prestigious category.
Speaking on Brunch in the Citi on Thursday, September 24, with Naa Oyoe Quartey, Black Sherif reflected on what it feels like to receive one of the biggest honours in Ghana’s music industry.
He said while the moment of winning the award is accompanied by a strong wave of excitement and celebration, the feeling gradually fades once the awards ceremony is over and everyday life resumes.
“It feels good to be the youngest Artiste of the Year. The feeling is fulfilling. The euphoria peaks on the awards night and it is just a normal day after the night.
“When you wake up, the euphoria is gone and what is left is plaques.”
Black Sherif has earned significant recognition since breaking into Ghana’s mainstream music scene, with his distinctive blend of hip-hop, Highlife and Afrobeats helping him establish a strong presence both locally and internationally.
Black Sherif won his second Ghana Music Awards Artiste of the Year award on May 9, 2026.
His latest victory came three years after he first won the award in 2023, further cementing his position among the leading figures in Ghana’s contemporary music landscape.
