Shatta Wale has written an open letter to President John Dramani Mahama calling for a balanced framework to tackle defamation and harassment on social media.
In the letter dated 28th September 2026, the dancehall star said he was responding to the President’s recent concern about insults and misinformation on TikTok.
Shatta Wale says he is responding to President Mahama’s recent remarks at the Town Hall Meeting with the Ghanaian community in New York, where the President expressed concern about misinformation and insults on TikTok and other platforms and about the difficulty of regulating new media without undermining freedom of expression.
Shatta Wale noted that as a creative who has faced years of unverified allegations, he knows the harm of online abuse, a problem now affecting traditional leaders, journalists and ordinary Ghanaians.
He proposed 7 points, including:
• A clear legal framework with judicial oversight
• Protection for criticism, journalism and satire
• Stronger account verification and court-ordered ID of abusive accounts
• Short, corrective sentences, not harsh punishment
• No return to criminal libel, repealed in 2001
• Public education and consultation with creatives
He stressed the goal is not to silence citizens but to restore responsibility while preserving free speech guaranteed by the 1992 Constitution.
