Rapper M.anifest has spoken about the challenges artistes face in navigating the music industry, particularly the pressure to conform to mainstream expectations in order to achieve commercial success.
The award-winning musician, born Kwame Ametepee Tsikata, said he was pleased to have built a career that allowed him to move beyond conventional ideas of what constitutes popular music, expressing hope that his journey would encourage emerging artists to explore their creativity without compromising their individuality.
Speaking to Caleb Kudah on the Citi Breakfast Show on Friday, October 16, M.anifest said the music industry often operates with established perceptions of what should be considered mainstream or popular, making it difficult for some talented musicians to fully express their artistic abilities.
He observed that musical culture continues to evolve as artists introduce different sounds, ideas and creative approaches that challenge existing expectations.
“In our ecosystem, in our society, at every given moment, a lot of people have a conception of what should be mainstream or what is popular but they always forget that somebody always has to be defined or now include something different into that zeitgeist and I am happy to be one of those people because there is so much incredible talent in Africa who have to compromise the beauty of their gift and reduce themselves to be able to succeed.
“And I am hoping that a path like mine will embolden people who are far greater than me, thankfully, who are coming after, to not have to reduce themselves to succeed.”
M.anifest built a reputation for his distinctive approach to hip-hop, combining intricate lyricism with social commentary and elements of African identity.
His career has also been associated with an emphasis on originality and creative independence.
The comments come as M.anifest prepares to celebrate the 10th anniversary of his Nowhere Cool album with an event scheduled for Saturday, October 24, 2026, at the Accra Polo Club.
