Any time Patapaa’s songs play, some people cringe because they believe he is not talented. To most people he has just been given media attention to get to where he is now.
Some have described his music as trash but that is what is sustaining him.
His success in the music industry has become a mystery a lot of people in the entertainment industry are struggling to unravel.
So far Patapaa has been able to maintain relevance with songs like ‘One Corner’, ‘Suro Nipa’, Sweet Honey’, among others.
One interesting thing about him is that he usually gets more visibility on songs on which he is featured on, sometimes taking the shine off the project. Example ‘Akwaaba’ by Guilty Beatz, ‘Dat Thing’ by Article Wan and ‘Daavi Ne Ba’ by Kawaoula.
So what is really the magic wand that is working for Patapaa? Just like Shatta Wale, there are three major factors contributing to Patapaa’s continuous relevance in the music industry.
1. Uniqueness: The entertainment industry is choked. There are thousands of talented musicians yearning for stardom. Most of them are working hard to put themselves out there. Honestly, it is not easy to get into mainstream music but there are strategies to make things easier. Patapaa’s personality is very unique. just like Shatta Wale, he has a personality that attracts the ordinary people on the streets.
2. Jargons: Patapaa has couched his own terminologies and jargons; he has created a language for himself. Even though people do not understand what he says in his ‘tongues’, any time he drops any of such lines, he gets people responding massively. The response is usually about either he is being insulted or being enjoyed for comic reasons. He has a great sense of humour so people are always willing to either see him perform or hear him talk.
To those who think his songs are ‘borla’, there are different songs for different purposes. Not every song has to make sense: music for the feet, music for the soul, music for the heart, music for the mind. Patapaa’s music is purely for amusement purposes and he has a market for that.
3. Controversies: Controversy sells. In showbiz, after discovering your talent (or whatever you may call it – the product), the rest is hype. While some spend money on different promotional strategies to stay relevant or get seen and heard, others deploy strategies that involve controversy. This is what has been working for Shatta Wale and Patapaa seemed to have tapped into that blessing too. He is able to sustain controversies about him and it is working him.
Now that the ‘Scopatumana’ controversy is giving him all the attention, we look forward to seeing how his new song ‘Scopatumana’ goes.
